THE EFFECTS OF ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF MAGNESIUM OXIDE ON RENAL CALCIUM EXCRETION IN CREW MEMBERS DURING A SUBMARINE PATROL by LCDR

چکیده
Twenty-four urine specimens were collected from randomly selected members of the crew of the U.S. Navy Submarine NATHAN HALE, SSBN623, while at sea on a routine patrol mission. Specimens were collected three days after submergence, and again a few days before return to port. Twenty-one men received daily dosages of 310 mg of magnesium oxide orally, while nineteen served as controls. Urine specimens were examined microscopically, then measured for calcium, phosphorus, and routine factors. No urine specimen examined was found to contain bacteria or white blood cells, nor was there any alteration in the routine chemistries. Total urinary calcium excretion in the control group fell from a mean of 178 mg pre-patrol to 135 mg post-patrol, while the group ingesting magnesium oxide exhibited a sample mean of 162 mg calcium post-patrol, which is a significantly different mean value (p=0.05). Phosphorus excretion was not significantly variant. These data indicate that magnesium oxide does have an ionic effect on urinary chemical excretion and may explain the so-called "protective mechanism."

Studies of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and acid-base balance were carried out on three Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarines during prolonged exposure to elevated concentrations of CO2. The average CO2 concentration in the submarine atmosphere during patrols ranged from 0.85% to 1% CO2. In the three studies, in which 9--15 subjects participated, the urinary excretion of calcium and pho...

Dental diseases, including periodontal disease, at times become vexacious health problems on submarine patrols. Dental calculus is thought to play a role in periodontal disease. Little is known about the oral factor on patrol which may influence the calculus formation rate. Past studies indicate that the salivary pH may have a role in this formation. The saliva from the anterior sublingual pool...

The results obtained in the present investigations point to a definite correlation between the onset of myocardial injury, electrocardiographic changes and biochemical changes. Changes in the electrocardiogram and elevated serum levels were paralleled by an increased excretion of magnesium in urine as early as one hour. Serum calcium and serum potassium levels did not show any significant ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Mg deficiency and effect of aminophylline infusion on urine magnesium concentration after magnesium loading test (MLT). To determine serum Mg, venous blood specimens were obtained just before the first MLT. Two MLTs were performed. The first one was done before starting aminophylline infusion and the 2nd one was done du...
